The three principles we learned in the previous chapter—practice rigorous authenticity, surrender the outcome, and do uncomfortable work—form the mask-free system, but it can only take you so far. It’s a powerful system for kicking your addiction to masks, but, like Chuck told me years ago, I could only stay clean on ego for so long. Same for you. If you try to work the system alone, you’ll be just as vulnerable as I was on the road to relapse and you won’t even know it. It took my sponsor identifying my blind spot, challenging my thought process, and making the suggestions based on his experience to get me back on track. If an addict wants to get clean and stay clean from drugs and alcohol, he needs a sponsor. And, if you want to keep the mask off and show your true face, well, you need a sponsor for that too.
